Aisling Halliden ’24 | Opinion: Top 5 German Song Recommendations of All-Time

I have long been a lover of German music and am one of the biggest fans of German pop music you will ever meet. 9 years of listening to some of the most popular…and unpopular songs, has brought me here to give you all my top 5 song recommendations! All the songs are linked below so make sure to go and give them a listen!

  1.  99 Luftballons (Nena)

Kicking it off and in the number 1 spot is 99 Luftballons by Nena. This song is a classic and even reached the top charts in the US at the time of its release. Even with the typical 80’s audiotune, this song will never go out of style and is such a great listen.

  1. Auf Uns (Andreas Bourani)

Coming in a close second after Nena is Andreas Bourani’s “Auf Uns” – one of the prettiest songs. This song is very upbeat, but emotional. If you get the chance to watch the music video, it will make you appreciate the little moments that make life so sweet.

  1.  Traum (Cro)

Taking the number 3 spot is Traum by one of my favorite bands, Cro. This song will be sure to make you want to get up and dance! If you are a fan of early 2010’s pop, then this song is definitely for you.

  1. Diego Maradona (Provinz)

This was the most recent addition to my favorites list. If you’re learning German, this song is perfect as Provinz sings the words a little bit slower and it can be really fun to listen to the words and try to understand what he is saying. This song absolutely never fails to put me in a good mood and I always have to sing-along when listening.

  1.  Lieblingsmensch (Namika)

My final recommendation and coming in at number 5 is Lieblingsmensch. Namika has a beautiful voice that makes this song so easy to listen to. If you are into Indie pop, this song has all of the same characteristics. It is upbeat but has a “chill vibe” and is a relaxing listen that I highly recommend.
