SAPANA SATYAL '24 | GERMAN EXCHANGE TRIP JUNE 2019 (AND PHOTOS)

In the summer of 2019, I went on an exchange trip to Germany with my high school. We were based in the city of Dortmund, where our partner school is located, and we went on various day trips to Münster, Cologne, and Düsseldorf, as well as overnight trips to Berlin, Heidelberg, and Frankfurt.

In Dortmund, we toured big attractions and visited some local places that our host students enjoyed and recommended such as  playgrounds and parks, including Phoenix-See (Phoenix Lake) and Seepark Lünen.

We went on an official tour of Westfalenstadion (the BVB Stadium); the largest stadium in Germany and one of the largest in Europe. We had the super cool opportunity of running through the tunnel that players enter the stadium through. There were a ton of flashing colored lights, a loudspeaker to simulate an announcer, and there was a giant countdown timer to tell us when to exit the tunnel. It was so much fun.

The other official tour we went on was the Dortmund city tour. The main thing we saw there was the Dortmund U, which is essentially a giant U on top of a building. It is the center of arts and creativity in Dortmund. The exchange trip was overall super enjoyable and we got to see so much, both in Dortmund and other cities.

The following are pictures from other cities in Germany that we visited on this trip:

Münster

Cologne: Cathedral

Berlin: Berlin Cathedral, Reichstag, East Side Gallery, Berlin Wall Memorial, Berlin Mitte

Düsseldorf: State parliament of North-Rhine-Westphalia

Frankfurt

Heidelberg: Heidelberg Castle
